This article discusses non-flow metrics used in Kentik queries.
Notes:
Streaming Telemetry is discussed in this article in relation to Kentik's non-NMS ST implementation. For information about ST for Kentik NMS, see NMS via Streaming Telemetry).
For general information about Kentik metrics, see About Metrics.
For device-specific metrics, see Device-specific Metrics.
Filter and group-by dimensions are covered in Dimensions Reference (see Per-flow Metrics).
Metrics are used for Kentik portal query settings and the Query API.
SNMP Metrics
If SNMP polling is enabled on a router (see SNMP OID Polling), Kentik is able to enrich the KDE with the SNMP-derived metrics listed below. These metrics are stored in Kentik using Universal Data Records (UDR), allowing flexible allocation of data to the columns of the Kentik Data Engine. See also Counter SNMP OIDs.
Notes:
SNMP metrics queries are subject to these restrictions:
SNMP metrics cannot be mixed with metrics from other categories.
Results return only if the query's dimensions are in the SNMP category in the Dimension Selectors.
UDR metrics have no persistent KDE columns.
SNMP Interface Metrics
The metrics listed in the table below are derived by Kentik from data collected from interfaces using the SNMP OIDs covered in Kentik-polled SNMP OIDs.
Metric in portal | Variations | OID | Calculated as... | Description |
---|---|---|---|---|
Bit Rate |
|
|
| Rate of bits received/transmitted on the interface, including framing characters. |
Packets |
|
|
| Rate of packets, including discards, which were not addressed to a multicast or broadcast address. |
Errors |
|
|
| The number of inbound/outbound packets that contained errors preventing them from being delivered/transmitted. |
Discards |
|
|
| The number of inbound/outbound packets that were chosen to be discarded even though no errors had been detected, possibly to free up buffer space. |
Multicast Packets |
|
|
| The number of inbound/outbound packets that were addressed to a multicast address. |
Broadcast Packets |
|
|
| The number of inbound/outbound packets that were addressed to a broadcast address. |
SNMP Device Metrics
Kentik derived the metrics below from data collected from devices made by specific vendors using SNMP OIDs (see Vendor-specific SNMP OIDs). These metrics are for individual components within a device, identified by the portal dimension Component (see SNMP Device Dimensions).
Metric in portal | Variations | Calculated as... | Description |
---|---|---|---|
CPU | N.A. |
| The percent of CPU utilization for the component. |
Memory Total | N.A. |
| The total amount, in bytes, of memory on this component. |
Memory Used | N.A. |
| The amount, in bytes, of memory used on this component. |
Memory Free | N.A. |
| The amount, in bytes, of memory available on this component. |
Memory Utilization | N.A. |
| The percent of memory utilization for the component. |
Streaming Telemetry Metrics
If streaming telemetry publishing is enabled on a router (see Streaming Telemetry Device Support) then you can run queries in the portal that return the values of ST interface metrics. The metrics that are available for these ST interface queries have the same names as the metrics listed in the table in SNMP Interface Metrics, but they appear in the Streaming Telemetry section of the list in the portal's Metrics dialog (e.g., in Data Explorer).
Notes:
Queries using Streaming Telemetry metrics are subject to these restrictions:
Streaming Telemetry metrics cannot be mixed with metrics from other categories.
Results return only if the query's dimensions are in the Streaming Telemetry category in the Dimension Selectors.
Streaming Telemetry is discussed in this article in relation to Kentik's non-NMS ST implementation. For information about ST for Kentik NMS, see NMS via Streaming Telemetry).
