This article covers Kentik’s Grafana integration.

Note: For other Kentik portal integrations, see Integrations.

Graph displaying traffic data by source interface over time with detailed metrics.

A custom Kentik dashboard as displayed in Grafana.

What You Can Do

The Kentik Connect Datasource for Grafana allows you to query your Kentik network data natively within Grafana, enabling you to build custom dashboards, combine network telemetry with other infrastructure data, and share network insights across your organization.

IMPORTANT: The new plugin (kentik-connect-datasource v2.0+) is a standalone data source, replacing the legacy flow-only app (kentik-connect-app v1.7.0). If you are currently using the legacy app, please refer to Migrate to v2 Data Source to ensure a smooth transition.

  • Flow Visibility in Grafana: Build highly customized panels analyzing network traffic, such as top talkers, interface utilization, and BGP community analysis.

  • Unified Monitoring: View your Kentik telemetry right alongside the rest of your organization's monitoring and observability data.

  • High-Performance Querying: A new batch query scheduler renders your dashboards 3–5x faster compared to the legacy app.

  • Granular Visibility: Filter and group traffic using over 290 dimensions, including deep contexts for Kubernetes, OTT, Kappa, and OCI.

  • Multi-Select Support: The new query editor allows you to select multiple sites, devices, and up to 8 dimensions simultaneously.

  • Smart Series Labeling: Customize your graph legends effortlessly using the Alias By field, featuring autocomplete for dynamic data tokens (e.g., {{Source Interface}}).

  • Portal Drilldowns: Seamlessly pivot from Grafana to Kentik. Every panel supports deep-linking, routing you directly to the Kentik portal with your exact time range and filters preserved.

  • Ready-to-Use Dashboards: The plugin includes four pre-built dashboards that can be imported instantly to jumpstart your visibility.

Data Scope & Limitations

The current version of the Kentik Connect Datasource is focused on Flow data and dimensions.

Compatibility & Prerequisites

  • Credentials: Requires a valid Kentik API token and user email.

  • Environments: Compatible with both self-hosted Grafana and Grafana Cloud environments.

  • Minimum Grafana Version: Requires a Grafana instance running v11.6 or later. There is no workaround for older versions.

  • Grafana 13.0.0+ Compatibility: If you are running Grafana version 13.0.0 or newer, you must use version v2.0.1 or later of the Kentik plugin to avoid known 404 routing errors.

Installation & Configuration

If you are setting up the Kentik integration in Grafana for the very first time, follow these steps to configure the data source:

  1. Add the Connection: In Grafana, navigate to Connections > Add new connection.

  2. Install the Plugin: In the search bar, look for Kentik and install the kentik-connect-datasource plugin.

  3. Configure Credentials: Navigate to Connections > Data Sources > Kentik to configure the connection using your Kentik email and API Token.

Kentik settings page for entering credentials and saving API settings.

  4. Import Dashboards: Open the Dashboards tab on the configuration page and click Import to load the four bundled out-of-the-box dashboards: Home, Top Talkers, Network Health & Traffic Overview, Site & Device Overview.
