Notes:
- To use Journeys, Kentik AI must be enabled (see Manage Kentik AI). For a full understanding of what Kentik AI is, how it works, and the precautions we take to protect our customers' data privacy and security, please refer to Kentik AI Overview.
- The NLQ translation capability of Journeys AI is also available to Kentik users in the Journeys AI NLQ APIs.
About the Journeys Page
The Journeys page enables you to enter a succession of natural language prompts that are each translated by Kentik AI into a query that returns results from Kentik systems such as traffic monitoring (flow) or network monitoring (NMS). The results for each successive prompt are shown in a right-hand display area so you can see your progress as you refine your prompt.
Designed for iterative question/answer processes such as troubleshooting, Journeys is similar to the Query Assistant in Kentik NMS in the sense that instead of setting controls in a user interface you query using natural language prompts, which can make it faster and more intuitive to arrive at your desired result. But Journeys is not limited to querying your organization's NMS metrics. Instead, it will eventually cover almost every aspect of the Kentik product, including not only flow and metrics but also Synthetics.
Journeys Page Layout
The Journeys page includes the following main areas:
- Sidebar: A collapsible sidebar at left that includes the New Journey button and a list of prior journeys (see Journeys Sidebar).
- Main display area: The main area where results are displayed as a series of panes, one for each prompt in the journey (see Journeys Display Area).
- Query pane: A fixed pane across the bottom of the display area that includes the Query field and additional controls (see Journeys Query Pane).
Journeys Sidebar
The sidebar at the left of the Journeys page includes the following elements:
- New Journey: The New Journey button returns the main display area to its initial state (see Journeys Default Display), saving the existing journey, if any, to a card in the My Journeys list. You can then start a new journey by entering a prompt in the Query field.
- My Journeys: A collapsible list of cards (see Journeys List Cards) that each represent a journey created by you personally. The journeys are sorted by when they were last changed (most recent first).
- Company: A collapsible list of cards that each represent a journey created by someone else in your organization. The journeys are sorted alphabetically by name.
The sidebar is collapsed/expanded by clicking in the vertical bar at the left of the Journeys Display Area, which darkens upon hover.
Journeys List Cards
Each card in the My Journeys list or the Company list represents one journey. The cards are listed in the order created, with the card for the journey currently shown in the main display area shaded medium gray and the other cards not shaded (white).
Each card includes the following fields:
- Name: A name for the journey.
- Modified (My Journeys only): When the journey was created or last edited.
- Owner (Company only): The user in your organization that created the journey.
- Visibility (eye icon): Indicates the scope of the journey's visibility:
- Private (strikethrough): Not shared with others in your organization (no one else has access). All new journeys default to private.
- Shared (no strikethrough): Shared with everyone in the organization.
Hovering over a card shows the following controls:
- Visibility (eye icon): Click to toggle the journey between the following private and shared.
Edit (pencil icon): Click to make the Name field editable, which also changes the pencil icon to a checkmark. Then enter a new name for the journey. To save the new name, click the checkmark, which takes the card out of edit mode. - Remove (trash icon): Click to remove the journey from the list immediately (no confirmation dialog). The main display area will return to the Journeys Default Display.
Journeys Display Area
The main display area of the Journeys page is covered in the following topics:
Journeys Default Display
In its initial state the display area includes the following elements:
- Welcome message: A brief statement of the purpose of Journeys.
- Preset prompts: A set of tiles, each containing a readymade prompt. Click on a tile to use its prompt as the starting point for a journey.
Note: If your organization has NMS enabled there will be nine tiles; if not there will be six. - Sidebar collapse/expand: A left-pointing single arrow positioned at the left of the display area, at its vertical halfway point. When the sidebar is expanded, click the arrow to collapse it. When the sidebar is collapsed, click to expand it.
Journeys In-progress Display
Once you start a journey, whether from a preset tile or from the Query field, the presets in the main display area's initial state are hidden. Instead you'll see a Journeys Results Pane representing the query results from one prompt. A results pane will be added to the display area for each successive prompt that you enter, creating a visual chain of steps leading to the ultimate results you need.
Journeys Results Pane
Each results pane in a journey includes the following elements:
- Results collapse/expand: An arrow button at the left of the title bar that collapses the pane to its title bar or expands it to show results.
- Owner: A label containing the initials of the journey's owner (the user who created it). Hover on the label to see the owner's full user name.
- Prompt: The prompt for which results are shown in the pane.
- Remove: An X at the right of the title bar that removes the pane from the Journey immediately (no confirmation popup).
- Results: An area for display of Journeys Query Results.
- Thumbs up: A button enabling you to indicate that the result provided a satisfactory answer to your question.
- Thumbs down: A button enabling you to indicate that the result did not provide a satisfactory answer to your question.
- Feedback: A button that opens the Provide Additional Feedback dialog.
- View in Explorer: A button that opens, in a new tab, either Data Explorer or Metrics Explorer, depending on the source of the results returned from your prompt. On the destination page the traffic shown in the Journeys results pane will be recreated with the settings of Query sidebar.
Note: Once you arrive at Data Explorer or Metrics Explorer you can make adjustments to the settings in the Query sidebar to return results that better reflect your intent.
Journeys Query Results
The results shown in the results pane include the following elements:
- Query settings summary: Information about the query whose results are currently displayed, including:
- Time Range: The time range for which results were returned.
- Data sources (Data Explorer results only): The number of data sources included out of your organization's total count of data sources.
- Filters: The number of filters used in the query. Click to open a popup detailing the applied filters. - Visualization: A chart of the returned traffic data (see Data Explorer Chart) or metrics data (see Visualization in Metrics Explorer Main Display).
- Results table: A table of the returned traffic data (see Data Explorer Table) or metrics data (see Results table in Metrics Explorer Main Display).
Provide Additional Feedback
The Provide Additional Feedback dialog for the Journeys page opens from the Feedback button at the bottom of a results pane. The dialog contains the following fields and controls:
- Response Rating: Radio buttons (Yes/No)with which you can tell us whether you got the results you expected from the prompt.
- Comment: An input field in which you can enter any additional information that you think would help us refine our Query Assistant capabilities.
- Cancel: Buttons — an X at upper right and a Cancel button at lower right — that close the dialog without giving feedback.
- Save: A button that closes the dialog and sends the feedback to Kentik.
Journeys Query Pane
The prompts for journeys are entered in a fixed pane that is overlaid on the bottom of the main display area. This Query pane includes the following fields and controls:
- Query: An input field into which you can enter, in natural language, text describing what you'd like your query results to show you (e.g. "show me interface utilization using line chart with "PEER" in the description"). To submit the entered text for conversion into a query, press Return/Enter on your keyboard.
- Tips: A button that opens a dialog with advice on building the most effective prompts.
- Scroll to Bottom: A button that scrolls the main display area to the bottom so you can see the most recent results pane in the journey.
