KMI Agent for AI Advisor

Prev Next

The KMI Agent for AI Advisor provides conversational access to KMI data directly within the Kentik platform.

Overview

The KMI Agent for AI Advisor (AIA) is an intelligent assistant integrated into Kentik’s AI Advisor (AIA). Powered by global Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing data from KMI, this agent specializes in analyzing ASNs, network topologies, and market dynamics through a conversational interface. The AIA documentation provides more information on using AIA.

To query the KMI Agent for AIA: Click Ask in the top navigation bar and enter plain-language questions regarding your network telemetry, traffic patterns, and performance in the AI Advisor dialog.

Key Differentiators

While the standard KMI portal provides structured charts and visual workflows, the KMI Agent for AIA expands functionality by dynamically combining multiple backend tools to query BGP data. Three specific examples include:

  • Strategic & Analytical Reasoning: Resolves open-ended strategic questions (e.g., target customer recommendations or root-cause ranking drop analysis) with data-backed explanations.

  • Natural-Language Historical Access: Queries network states and relationship shifts across any timeframe in the dataset using natural-language time expressions (e.g., "last quarter", "30 days ago").

  • Prefix-Level Visibility: Inspects specific IPv4 and IPv6 address blocks transited across individual network edges or relationships.

  • Targeted/Detailed Network Edge visibility: Displays the evolution of an edge score over time and displays the current IP prefixes routed across the edge.

Agent Capabilities & Functions

The KMI Agent for AIA supports the following core operational and strategic analysis workflows:

Workflow

Description

Example queries

ASN Discovery and Lookup

Identify Autonomous Systems (ASes) by organization name, ASN, or operational parameters.

  • “What is my company's ASN?”

  • “Find ASNs related to my provider.”

  • “Look up Google's autonomous system.”

AS Relationships and Network Topology

Analyze transit (provider-customer) and settlement-free peering connections.

Track historical network changes, single-homing status, customer churn, and AS edge connection strength between networks over time.

  • “Who are my provider’s customers in the US?”

  • “What customers did my provider lose in the last month?”

  • “Track the AS edge strength between my ASN and Google over the last quarter.”

ASN Rankings and Market Position

Evaluate global, regional, and national market positioning across core data dimensions.

see ASN Rankings and Market Position for detailed ranking query parameters.

Market Intelligence and Growth Strategy

Deliver strategic market analysis, customer acquisition recommendations, and ranking attribution details.

  • “What customers should AS3320 target in Germany to improve ranking?”

  • “Why did my ranking drop in France last month?”

  • “Which networks should we acquire as customers to reach top 5 in the US?”

IP Prefix and Address Space Analysis

Analyze specific IPv4 and IPv6 address allocations, prefix distributions, and transited address space between ASNs.

  • “What prefixes does AS8075 have in Canada? “

  • “Show me IPv6 prefixes for Google globally. “

  • “List prefixes between AS6762 and AS8452 in the Netherlands.”

Data Visualization and Historical Analysis

Render answers using structured tables or dynamic diagrams to track historical KMI data evolution over time.

  • “Show the historical evolution of my KMI data on a timeline.”

  • “Generate a diagram showing network topology changes over the last year.”

ASN Rankings and Market Position

The KMI Agent for AIA evaluates global, regional, and national market positioning across core data ranking dimensions. The following table describes the primary ranking dimensions available in the agent, their analytical use cases, and how to query them.

Ranking Dimension

Definition

Use Case

Example Prompt (Ask Field)

Customer Base

Capture all IP prefixes transited by the network.

Benchmark overall provider size and market reach.

  • What are the top 10 ASNs in Brazil by customer base?

  • Track AS3356's customer base ranking in Europe for the last 90 days.

Retail

Represent originated prefixes and prefixes from single-homed (sole-provider) customers.

Identify direct end-user footprint and single-homed prospecting targets.

  • What are the top 5 retail ASNs in Germany to target single-homed prospects?

  • Show the highest-ranked IPv4 retail networks in Japan.

Wholesale

Cover prefixes transited from multi-homed downstream customers.

Measure intermediate transit relationships and secondary provider footprint.

  • Show the top wholesale transit providers in APAC by customer volume.

  • Rank the leading wholesale networks in Europe over the last 30 days.

Backbone

Capture prefixes transited from upstream providers.

Analyze high-volume core transit carry and Tier-1 routing paths.

  • Rank the top 5 backbone ASNs in North America by transited IP space.

  • Which networks hold the highest backbone ranking globally?

Peering

Include prefixes exchanged over settlement-free peering connections.

Analyze cost-free interconnect capacity and settlement-free routing scope.

  • Which ASNs in Europe have the highest peering rank over the last quarter?

  • Show the top 10 peering networks at London IXPs by transited prefix volume.

Geographic Coverage & Data Dimensions

The KMI Agent for AIA processes BGP routing data across multiple geographic scopes and technical parameters:

  • Geographic Scope: Automatically scopes queries across hierarchical market levels, including Global, Continent, Major Region, Minor Region, Country (~240 countries), and US States/Regions.

  • Address Families: Defaults to IPv4 data; IPv6 analysis can be specified explicitly within the prompt.

  • Historical Depth: Supports point-in-time queries and trend analysis across any historical timeframe covered by the dataset.

KMI AI Agent for AIA Advisor Best Practices

Review the following operational constraints when constructing queries for the KMI Agent:

  • Metric Basis: KMI Agent rankings measure transited IP address space, not physical traffic volume. See KMI Ranking Methodology for details.

  • Market Scope: Relationship profiles, rankings, and Single Homed ASes classifications vary by geographic market.

  • Query Performance: Deep prefix-level queries for large global ASNs may take longer to return than general relationship queries.
