Using the Library

The Kentik Detect portal now includes a library section that provides a single page from which to access, view, and manage (create, edit, categorize, etc.) your organization’s views of network traffic data, including dashboards, saved views, and reports. This article, which provides a quick guide to using the Library, includes the following topics:

Note: For a complete reference to the Library, see Portal Library.

Overall UI Changes

Adding the Library to the Kentik Detect portal has resulted in a number of changes to portal UI, the most significant of which are as follows:

  • Library has been added to the navbar, taking you to the Library Page.
  • Dashboards has been removed from navbar. Dashboards are now accessed via the list of views on the Library tab of the Library (see Library List).
  • Saved Views has been removed from the Data Explorer menu on the navbar. Saved views are also now accessed via the Library tab.
  • Universal Search icon (magnifying glass) has been added to the navbar, providing access to the Universal Search modal no matter where you are in the portal (see Universal Search).

Managing Existing Views

The following topics provide information about common tasks related to existing dashboards and saved views:

Find a View

To find a view, either open the Universal Search popup (see Universal Search) or click Library on the portal navbar and look for the view in the Library List on the Library tab:

  • If the view has been designated as favorite or has been opened recently, it will be in one of the Library Special Folders pinned to the top of the list.
  • If the view is Kentik-provided, it will be in the Kentik section of the list (see Library List Structure).
  • If you created the view and did not share it for use by others in your organization, it will be in the private section under your user name.
  • If the view is shared for use by everyone in your organization, it will be in the shared section under your company name.

Open a View

Once you’ve found the view you can open it by clicking on it in the list. Both dashboards and saved views will open in the display area. To open a saved view in Data Explorer, use the Open in Data Explorer button (see Saved View Display Controls).

Modify or Remove a View

Your ability to change or remove a given view depends on your Edit and Remove Permissions. Assuming that you have the correct permissions, you can modify a view from the Library. In the list in the Library tab, access the List Item Context Menu by clicking the menu icon at the right of the view’s row, then choose one of the following options:

  • Edit:
    - A dashboard will open in edit mode in the Library display area, where it can be edited using Edit Mode Controls.
    - A saved view will open in Data Explorer, where it can be modified and saved.
  • Properties:
    - For dashboards, opens the Dashboard Properties dialog (see About Dashboard Dialogs).
    - For saved views, opens the Saved View Properties dialog (see Saved View Dialogs).
Modify dialog settings, including (if desired) specifying a category in the drop-down Category menu. Then click Save to save changes.
  • Remove (trash icon): Removes the dashboard or saved view from your organization’s collection of views.

Creating New Views

To create a new dashboard or saved view in the Library, start with the controls at the top of the Library tab (see Library General UI):

  • Create a dashboard:
    - Click the New Dashboard button to open the Add Dashboard dialog.
    - Fill in the dashboard settings as described in Dashboard Dialogs, including (if desired) a category from the drop-down Category menu.
    - Click the Save button to save the dashboard.
  • Create a saved view:
    - Click the New Saved View button to navigate to Data Explorer.
    - Using the Explorer Sidebar Controls and the View Type menu in the Chart Display UI, configure the view that you’d like to save.
    - Open the Add Saved View dialog to fill in view properties, including (if desired) a category from the drop-down Category menu.
    - Click the Save button to save the view (see Saving a View).

Note: Users can also ask Kentik to create Reports that address specific use cases for specific types of users and appear in the Library (see About the Library). To request a report, please contact Customer Support.

Cloning a View

An alternative to creating a new view from scratch is to clone an existing dashboard or saved view and modify it as needed for a different purpose. To clone a view in the Library:

  1. On the Library tab, access the List Item Context Menu by clicking the menu icon at the right of the row for the view that you want to clone.
  2. Choose Clone from the menu.
  3. The duplicate view will appear in the list, with the original name preceded by “[CLONED FROM].”
  4. From the duplicate view’s context menu, choose Properties to rename the view, assign it to a category, and change other settings.
  5. From the duplicate view’s context menu, choose Edit to modify the view itself:
    - A dashboard will open in edit mode, where it can be edited using Edit Mode Controls.
    - A saved view will open in Data Explorer, where it can be modified and saved.
